How to Choose Web Hosting for a Nepali Business

Hosting is where websites quietly succeed or suffer: it determines your speed (which Google ranks), your uptime (which customers experience), and your options when something goes wrong at midnight. It is also a market full of misleading marketing. Here is how to choose without learning the expensive way.

The Four Hosting Types, Honestly Compared

TypeRight forThe catch
Shared hostingBrochure sites, low traffic, tight budgetsYou share a server with hundreds of strangers - their spikes and infections become your problems
VPSBusiness sites, stores, applicationsYour own slice of resources - but "unmanaged" means you (or your provider) must actually manage it
Cloud (AWS/GCP/etc.)Applications needing scale and reliabilityPowerful and pay-per-use; complexity and cost need governance
Dedicated serverHeavy, steady workloadsMaximum control, maximum responsibility

For a typical Nepali business website or store, a managed VPS hits the sweet spot: real performance without shared-hosting roulette, at prices well below dedicated hardware.

What Actually Matters - and What Is Marketing

Matters:

  • Server response time (TTFB): ask for a test site and measure. Under 500ms is the bar; the cheapest shared plans routinely fail it.
  • Real backups: daily, retained for weeks, restorable by you - and tested. "We have backups" without restore access has burned many businesses.
  • Support that answers: midnight-outage support in a channel you can actually reach. Test it before buying: send a technical pre-sales question and time the answer.
  • SSD/NVMe storage, current PHP/database versions, free SSL. Standard now - absence is disqualifying.

Mostly marketing: "Unlimited" anything (read the fair-use clause - it is never unlimited), inflated "99.99%" claims without SLA credits, and bundled extras (free domains, site builders) that distract from the fundamentals above.

Local vs International Hosting for Nepali Sites

  • Audience mostly in Nepal: latency from Singapore/India datacenters is fine in practice; a CDN (like Cloudflare) closes the gap further. Local Nepali hosting offers proximity and local support hours, but compare the actual infrastructure quality - a well-run Singapore VPS often beats a cramped local shared server.
  • International audience: host near your customers or use a CDN - and this decision matters more than any local consideration.
  • Payment and support preferences (NPR billing, Nepali-language support) are legitimate factors - just not at the price of performance fundamentals.
The honest summary: the brand matters less than the management. A modest VPS that is properly configured, cached, monitored, and backed up outperforms an expensive plan running defaults. Hosting is 20% purchase, 80% operation.

Red Flags and the Questions to Ask

Walk away when you see: prices that triple on renewal (check year-two pricing), no published SLA, support only via ticket with day-long silences, servers running years-old PHP, or a provider who cannot say where your data physically lives.

Ask before buying:

  1. What is the server response time on a real site I can test?
  2. How do I restore a backup myself, and how far back can I go?
  3. What happens when I outgrow this plan - migration path and cost?
  4. Who fixes it when the site is down at 11 PM on Saturday?

Want it handled instead? We host and manage client sites on infrastructure we operate ourselves - with the monitoring, backups, and security discipline from our maintenance service. And if you are stuck on a bad host, our migration service moves you without downtime or lost rankings.
